The Brisbane Airport is currently undergoing a $2.5 billion redevelopment that includes the building of a new runway, access roads and expansion of the airport’s terminals. The project commenced in 2006 and is due for completion in 2016. One of the key aspects of this project has been the diverse stakeholders involved, which include airlines, airport businesses, government organisations, residents and commuters. This has provided John Richards, the Brisbane Airport Corporation’s Executive Manager of Major Projects, with significant skills in dealing with multiple stakeholders. He will share his knowledge on:

1:20 Developing Risk Management Strategies To Enable The Successful Delivery Of Infrastructure Projects: The EastLink Experience

EastLink is Australia’s largest road development, comprising about 39km of freeway-standard road, as well as more than 35km of bicycle and walking paths for local residents. The project was delivered by the private sector under the Victorian Government’s Partnerships Victoria framework. With a construction cost of $2.5 billion, the total project is valued at $3.8 billion, comprising $2.1 billion in bank debt and $1.7 billion in equity funding. Major construction began in early 2005 and the road opened to traffic on 29 June 2008, five months ahead of schedule. John Gardiner, who is the MD of ConnectEast, the consortium who built and operates EastLink, will share his learnings from the successful delivery of this major project, including:

  • Key considerations when developing a workable risk management process
  • Managing stakeholder expectations and balancing stakeholder needs
  • Ensuring risk management strategies streamline risk to the party most able to absorb it
